Hello everyone, bonjour tout le monde!

Welcome to my new website.

Some of you (especially the French-speaking ones) might be wondering why oh why have I decided to move my blog from the previous site to this one.

There’s a few reasons, but the main one was that I found myself losing interest in writing and this is me kicking my own ass.

Also, the 23rd of September 2012 was my first ever blog post. I wanted to celebrate 3 years of writing and I think that inaugurating a new virtual notebook is pretty cool.

The focus of this blog will remain the same: travels, life, observations, empathy, with a new emphasis on teaching, living abroad, collaborations from fellow travellers I’ve met along the way (interviews, guest writers) and photography. Also lists! for some reason, lists are super popular on the internet, so I’ll be trying my hand at those too.

If you have any questions, suggestions for guests, need to talk about animals, are bored, curious, mischievous, just got a sweet new tattoo, need to pretend to be working or just want to share a story or a picture, feel free to let me know!

You can also reach me at bierederoute@gmail.com

And now, for a bit of nostalgia, here is my first ever post. Re-reading this I realise that I’ve come a long way and that for the most part I haven’t lost sight of my goals.

Without further delays, here it is.

I still remember how I felt the first time I used Italics. Hmmmm.

I hope you’ll enjoy it the second time as much as the first. (That’s what he said).

Obligatory Introduction

1st post… Obligatory introduction? Time to talk about my motives and visions? Let’s start with my surroundings… I’m sitting on a sidewalk bench on Avenue Mont-Royal, in beautiful Montréal, my home town. It’s getting cold outside, but for the first time in 10 years, my hair is longer than my beard (which is getting pretty scruffy in itself) and offers good insulation. Drinking Arizona Iced Tea and dicking around on my iPod…

In truth, this is the perfect time to start a blog. I used to have one – about gaming and comics – that I would update during working hours, that job that I had where I was hidden away in a cubicule and no one would ever check up on me. This blog will be different however. It’s going to help me understand my own moral compass… A sort of personal journal open for discussions. Hey, maybe it’ll entertain or inspire some peeps.

The crossroads which I am standing at, there’s so many ways to go… Except back.

2 years ago, I broke up with “the ex”, the one everyone thought I was gonna have kids with. Ever since, it’s been an emotional rollercoaster. But you get used to these sensations. So, I find myself becoming more and more numb, and only the highest of frustrations or the best of laughs (or help from drugs) gets to me.

Thus, my first step in that new life that I chose for myself, was to quit the customer service job that was slowly killing me, find a more hands-on job for a few months – I manage a warehouse for a company that builds and maintains cellphone towers- and purchase a one-way plane ticket to South-East Asia. I’m leaving on November 5th.

I’ve never done anything like that. Always played it safe and boring, and drink all my money away to compensate for my lack of guts. I still drink most of it away mind you, but this feeling of adventure, excitement, curiosity… I feel like a kid again. And it’s starting to feel fucking good.

I’m looking forward to speaking with internet weirdos. After all, I’m writing these words for you as much as for me. If not, I’d be writing in a book, and stashing it in a drawer somewhere.

Until my next evening walk interrupted by free Wi-Fi, have a good one.

Make bonds not bombs.

Étienne
